What is Differential Source Balancing?
Differential Source Balancing is a unique and advanced technology that allows you the balance the benefits of green energy with the practical requirements of predictable power. Our proprietary algorithms dynamically monitor and programmatically control multiple power sources with preferential control of the sources. The output is clean, digital AC power – irrespective of the source.
No other technology on the market today can match these capabilities.
An SMS controlled system draws power from the preferential source (ie: solar), and then based on the program that you set, dynamically monitors and automatically draws the deficient power from the secondary source (grid, battery, generator). The result: 100% utilization of the solar you generate (no waste!) and predictable, consistent, interrupted, pure digital power – irrespective of the power source.
Example: Running a three-phase AC motor with solar.
Now you can run a three-phase AC device (ie; a water pump) using lower cost solar power as your preferred choice with the confidence of a consistent backup source.
When the solar power falls below the minimum required to run the device, an SMS Solar+Grid/GenSet Controller with Differential Source Balancing gives you a choice; you can programmatically set the device to shut down – or you could continue to run the device, with no interruption, using 100% of the solar being produced and drawing only the deficient power that you need to keep it running. All this happens automatically – set the program (you can program and monitor the system from your phone) and SMS technology dynamically monitors and adjusts the sources. It's easy and much more convenient than having to babysit systems using manual controls.
When the available solar input drops below the required minimum, other systems would switch to the alternative source, ie; grid power – and you would be paying the utility for ALL the power to run your motor/pump, while your solar panels were sitting idle. That's not very efficient, and with SMS solutions no longer necessary.
100% utilization of solar input and predictable operation.
When solar input falls short of demand, 100% of the available solar is used to run high-efficiency three-phase AC motors. The SMS Smart Power station utilizes solar as a preferential source and excess power is intelligently managed using our proprietary Charge Controls.
Other systems are limited in how they can apply the solar power generated. When excess solar is being produced, some systems can direct the balance to charge batteries, but since battery systems aren't intelligently managed what often happens is that you spend money to charge batteries with grid power, instead of benefiting from free solar. Then, when excess solar becomes available it's not utilized – you waste your free power and pay the utility instead! Only an SMS system ensures that 100% of the solar power you generate is utilized.
The other problem with conventional systems is that they only switch between sources. If the solar input drops (shadowing) below the minimum required to run the device, other systems switch to using all of a more expensive source. Those systems can't balance between input sources. And this switching between sources can produce power that is not the same consistency or quality – which is generally bad for motors and other devices.
Unlike any other system, an SMS controller is able to draw power from multiple sources and provide uninterrupted, consistent, pure digital power to the device or power system. Based on the priority you set, the remaining power is drawn from batteries, grid, generator or combination!

* Note that other inverters promise 'instantaneous power', which is NOT the same as uninterrupted power!

Our built-in transfer switch automatically disconnects your loads from the utility grid and powers them from the inverter in the event of an outage, allowing you to continue using your solar and battery backup power (unlike traditional grid-tie systems). This eliminates the problem that many people have discovered with their grid-tied inverter system: When the grid goes down, even if the sun is shining, their solar panels can't provide them power!
